Summer Vacation Capsule Wardrobe

July is almost over and my kids are heading back to school in just under two weeks which is crazy to think about. I feel like summer break time is similar to weekend time where it seems to go by three times as fast as the rest of the days. I had quite a lot going on this month which definitely helped make the time go by faster as well. I had so much fun putting together July’s capsule wardrobe post that I knew I wanted to do another one for August.

Last month I incorporated quite a few pieces, many of which you will see again in this month’s post but I wanted to keep this one as minimalistic as possible. As I’ve mentioned previously, I don’t have a traditional capsule wardrobe nor would I even say that I have a true minimalist wardrobe but I do try to keep things simple and wear mostly neutral, high quality, versatile pieces that can be mixed, matched and repeated dozens of different ways. For August, I’m focusing on a summer vacation capsule wardrobe filled with everyday pieces to help make planning for your next getaway a little easier.

The May grey and June gloom seemed to linger forever but now we are finally experiencing our summer temperatures. In this summer vacation capsule I have included  at total of 17 items. Six bottoms including 5 pairs of shorts and 1 pair of white cropped jeans; Six tops including 4 tanks and 2 bodysuits; 1 denim jacket / outer layer, 3 shoes and one hat. These items can all be mixed and matched and are things I would definitely want to pack with me if I were going on vacation.

While some of these pieces are on the cheaper side, some of them were a little bit pricier because I knew they were pieces I’d wear over and over again for years to come so I felt that it was worth the investment. One example is my Tory Burch sandals, while they are $198, I’ve had this pair for ten years and worn them hundreds of time which gives them a very low cost per wear. Many of these items I’ve had for a few years already and they’ve held up quite well after several wears and washes.

The olive and linen shorts are both from Reformation and I absolutely love this brand because they’re clothing is sustainably made. I’ve had the linen pair for about 4 summers now and they’re in great condition. Plus the pull on elastic waistband style makes them super comfortable. The black tank is from this brand as well. While wearing and re-wearing our clothing as many times as possible helps reduce waste and pollution to our environment, buying things that are sustainably made is an added bonus. Over time this is all better for our personal budgets as well.

There are a few items in this summer vacation capsule that I’ve recently added to my closet but most of these pieces I’ve owned for several seasons already. Many of the items in this capsule are things that you may even already have in your closet to be able to recreate these looks. Once you have a good foundation of basics in your closet, it is easy to add in new tops and accessories every now and again to keep your wardrobe feeling fresh. However, new isn’t always necessary. I was able to create thirty different outfits with only 17 items which included three pairs of shoes and a hat.

Although the kids will be going back to school soon and summer break is almost over, summer weather is not going anywhere. In fact, I still have a few more summer getaways planning in August. I don’t know about you but I try to pack the least amount of items possible whenever I go on a trip so having a mini capsule is always helpful for me. I often will take pictures of the outfits I plan to wear beforehand and make sure that everything I bring along coordinates to make getting dressed easier and to know that I have back up options.

Even if you’re not heading out on any trips, these are everyday items that you can easily incorporate into your wardrobe and wear for years to come. Since it didn’t warm up here until July, we will have temperatures above ninety degrees well into October so I will continue to incorporate many of these pieces into my outfits for several more months.

Not only am I hoping to provide you with outfit inspo for your next vacation or your everyday life but this is also a fun little project for me to help me be more creative with my outfit planning. I started my page @mix.match.repeat after being heavy into the “influencer” culture when running my former blog, My SoCaled Life. I realized it was not necessary (nor financially feasible or sustainable – the list goes on) to constantly be buying new clothes and trying all of the latest trends. This helped me to realize just how many outfits I could make with items already in my closet. If this post doesn’t resonate with you in any other way, I hope to at least inspire you to shop your closet more before buying new things. I’m so grateful to have this platform to bring a little more context to my outfit sharing as well as share more things I’m passionate about with you all.
